What Is Camelot Notation?
Camelot notation is a system that assigns each of the 24 musical keys a number (1–12) and a letter (A for minor, B for major). It was developed to make harmonic mixing intuitive for DJs — instead of memorizing music theory, you just match numbers and letters.
Examples:
- A Minor = 8A — one of the most common keys in electronic music
- C Major = 8B — the relative major of A Minor
- F# Minor = 11A — common in techno and trance
Compatible keys for mixing are adjacent on the Camelot wheel: same number (different letter), or adjacent numbers (same letter).
