What is OGG Vorbis?
OGG Vorbis is a free, open-source, patent-free audio compression format. It is the audio component of the OGG container format, developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation as an alternative to proprietary formats like MP3.
OGG Vorbis is the preferred format for:
- Game development — Unity, Godot, and Unreal Engine support OGG natively for music and sound effects
- Web audio — supported by Chrome, Firefox, and Edge for browser-based audio
- Linux workflows — native format on many Linux distributions and open-source media players
- Open-source projects — patent-free, no licensing concerns for commercial or open-source use
