What Is the Camelot System?

The Camelot system (also called the Camelot Wheel or Open Key notation) is a method for organizing musical keys in a way that makes harmonic mixing intuitive for DJs. It was developed by Mark Davis and popularized by Mixed In Key software.

The system assigns each of the 24 musical keys (12 major + 12 minor) a number from 1–12 and a letter:

  • A = Minor keys
  • B = Major keys

The numbers are arranged like a clock, where adjacent keys are harmonically compatible. This makes it easy to find tracks that will blend together without harmonic clashing.

Camelot Key Compatibility Rules

When mixing harmonically using the Camelot system, these combinations work best:

  • Perfect match — same Camelot key (e.g., 8A → 8A). No harmonic change, seamless blend.
  • Relative major/minor — same number, switch letter (e.g., 8A → 8B). Smooth energy shift between minor and major.
  • Energy boost — move one number up (e.g., 8A → 9A). Increases energy and tension.
  • Energy drop — move one number down (e.g., 8A → 7A). Decreases energy, creates a calmer feel.
  • Dominant mix — move three numbers up (e.g., 8A → 11A). Creates a dramatic, powerful transition.

Avoid mixing keys that are far apart on the wheel (5+ positions) as they will clash harmonically.

Why Use Camelot for DJ Mixing?

Harmonic mixing using the Camelot system produces mixes that sound musically intentional rather than random. Benefits include:

  • No harmonic clashing — compatible keys blend together naturally without dissonance
  • Emotional flow control — you can deliberately raise or lower the emotional energy of your set
  • Professional sound — harmonic mixing is used by top DJs including Carl Cox, Armin van Buuren, and Tiësto
  • Easier track selection — the Camelot system simplifies the complex music theory behind key compatibility
  • Works with any genre — house, techno, trance, hip-hop, and more all benefit from harmonic mixing
