Beatmatching is the foundation of DJing. It's the art of aligning two tracks so they play at the same tempo and phase, creating a seamless transition between songs. While modern DJ software can sync tracks automatically, understanding manual beatmatching makes you a better DJ and prepares you for any situation.
What is BPM and Why Does It Matter?
BPM stands for "Beats Per Minute" — it's the tempo of a track. A song at 128 BPM has 128 beats in one minute. When two tracks have the same BPM, their beats align, allowing you to mix them together smoothly. Our free BPM finder lets you detect the exact tempo of any audio file instantly.
Step-by-Step Beatmatching Process
Detect the BPM of Both Tracks
Start by finding the BPM of both the track currently playing (Track A) and the one you want to mix in (Track B). Use our BPM finder to analyze both files. Note the tempos — if they're different, you'll need to adjust the pitch fader.
Match the Tempos
Adjust the pitch fader on Track B until its BPM matches Track A. Most DJ controllers show the BPM on screen, but you can also do this by ear. The goal is to get both tracks playing at exactly the same speed.
Cue Up Track B
Find the first beat of a phrase in Track B (usually the start of a bar). Set your cue point there. Listen to Track A and identify where a phrase ends — typically every 8, 16, or 32 bars.
Start the Mix
As Track A approaches the end of a phrase, start Track B playing from your cue point. Listen to both tracks together in your headphones. If they're not aligned, use the jog wheel to nudge Track B forward or backward until the beats match.

Practice Makes Perfect
Beatmatching is a skill that takes time to develop. Start with two tracks that have clear, steady beats. House and techno are great genres to practice with because they have consistent 4/4 rhythms. Once you can beatmatch manually, you'll have a deeper understanding of your music and more confidence behind the decks.
